Present Day: Locally Led Conservation

Even as conservation evolved to address water, forests, wildlife, and other resources, Hugh Hammond Bennett’s original vision of locally led conservation stayed at the heart of the work. Locally led conservation places decision-making in the hands of the people who know the land best—those who live and work on it every day. National and state agencies offer policy direction, tools, and support, but real conservation happens locally and voluntarily, through the actions and leadership of landowners and their communities.

Under the locally led model:

Landowners and community members identify natural resource needs.
Conservation districts bring together partners to address those needs.
NRCS provides technical expertise, financial assistance, and planning tools.
State agencies, nonprofits, and local groups contribute funding, knowledge, and support.
